Recently a digital sculptor consulted me because they were going through an episode of imposter syndrome, and Adam Savage (of “Mythbusters” tv series fame) has talked openly about his experiences of it on his “Tested" YouTube channel, so it seems timely to explain a little about it and how the Bach flower remedies can help.

Self doubt can creep up on any creative person, whether you are a hobbyist, training in the arts, starting your own creative business or have a creative career.

There are similarities between self doubt and imposter syndrome. The emotions and feelings overlap, both can be acute or chronic  but there’s a  distinction that sets imposter syndrome apart.

Those feelings of inadequacy exist despite evidence of success, high levels of performance, and extensive training and experience. Those very attributes and achievements which have brought you success now make you question your ability and feel like a fraud. It can undermine your sense of self and your belief in your work, which can lead to increased isolation and depression. A common reaction to feeling this way is to work harder for longer, so it's no surprise that it’s a major contributor to burnout. Anybody who has experienced it knows it’s a grim position to be in.

As soon as you feel that familiar feeling, shifting your perspective, even slightly, can help. Normalising it is helpful. Imposter syndrome doesn’t discriminate. The most talented, skilled, senior creatives in positions of authority still experience it. It’s worth noting that imposter syndrome is usually in response to a situation or environment. It’s not about your ability or a sign that you’re underperforming.

The Bach flower remedies can help you move out of an episode of imposter syndrome. They repurpose the undermining emotional energy into emotional energy which renews and restores your confidence, belief in your ability and true sense of self.

Here are some possibilities (though not all will be relevant to you):

Uncertainty - Scleranthus, Elm, Wild Oat, Hornbeam, Larch

Inadequacy - Larch, Elm, Pine, Mimulus

Lack of faith in yourself - Cerato, Gentian

The best remedies are the ones selected for your character, situation and specific emotions and mental state, taking into account the nuances of each of the remedies. A practitioner can guide you with this and a consultation is cathartic and therapeutic in itself.
