Heather is a flower remedy for loneliness, one of three flowers Dr. Bach discovered to balance loneliness with its positive potential of warm connection and communication. Being a skilled, experienced observer of human nature, Dr. Bach was able to distinguish the nuances of this feeling and how it presents in different ways, hence the three different flower remedies.
How to spot if somebody is in need of the Heather flower remedy
It's quite easy! They are talkative and it can be hard to get a word in edgeways. It can seem that you are being talked at, not with, the conversation is more of a monologue and all about themselves.
If you have been in the company of somebody behaving like this, you'll know how irritating it can be and how it shuts down two-way conversation.
So how is it that somebody, who talks to any- and everybody, is lonely?
Those one-sided conversations push people away, so they find another person to talk to and the same thing happens, over and over again. Other people avoid them. They feel even lonelier as a result of their attempts to connect with others.
How to recognise this in ourselves
It's one of the more difficult emotional states to recognise. It's hard to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge our faults and failings. A compassionate and understanding perspective is needed.
Carl Jung, (Swiss psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, 1875-1961) observed that,
“Loneliness is not the absence of people. Loneliness is the inability to express what matters to you most.”
Dr. Bach also had a different perspective. He wrote,
They are unhappy if they have to be alone for any length of time. They seek the companionship of anyone who may be available... no matter who it may be.
With the wisdom in these two simple quotes, we now have a deeper understanding of what motivates these talkative people, preoccupied with themselves. This is key to recognising the negative Heather state in ourselves.
How does the Heather remedy help?
It relieves the feelings of loneliness by encouraging you to listen to others, to use your own experiences to understand and develop empathy for the people you talk to. It helps you to be more comfortable when you are alone by encouraging you to look after yourself and meet your own needs.
Like all the flower remedies, Heather releases the negative states and replaces them with the positive states.
All the positive states are already within us, the Bach flower remedies allow them to surface and flourish.
